Dog Selection & Assessment

Dogs from the Shelter

FSI K9 makes an effort to get a large part of our dogs from shelters and other rescue organizations, and train them for scent detection so that they have a second chance at life. Many dogs that have difficulty finding a home as a pet often have the potential to make excellent working dogs. Although pure bred dogs might occasionally be available for adoption it is more common to find mix breed dogs in shelters and rescues. Specific breeds may be available, either provided by the customer or from a qualified breeder, to be trained upon request. Experienced trainers observe and evaluate dogs to determine if they have the personality characteristics, abilities and drives which make them likely to be successful in training. Of course, the health and fitness of the animal is of great importance. In general mix breed dogs are less likely to suffer from genetic issues that may be common in some pure bred dogs. All our dogs are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on vaccinations.

A big thank you to the following shelters and organization that provide our new recruits.
